The Economy: As of May 2016
After a tumultuous start to the year, May represented the third straight month of gains for the S&P 500. Year-to-date its performance is now up to 3.57%. Top sectors include traditional dividend payers in utilities and telecom. The rebound in oil prices since February’s lows have helped energy stocks increase 12.4% for the year. Health care and technology stocks have been relatively weak, which explains the NASDAQ’s 0.61% yearly decline. International equity markets had a negative month, largely due to poor performance in Japan. High yield bonds continue their rebound, and are now up over 8.0% for the year.
